Wales Heat Pump Grant — £7,500 BUS + Nest
Wales uses the same £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme as England — applied by your MCS installer. Plus the Welsh Government's Nest scheme can cover 100% of installation cost for eligible low-income households.
The £7,500 BUS for Wales
Wales uses the same Boiler Upgrade Scheme as England — administered by Ofgem with identical rules. £7,500 for any air source or ground source heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer.
The application process is identical to England:
- Get a valid EPC (no outstanding insulation recommendations)
- Get quotes from MCS-certified installers
- Installer pre-approves the BUS application with Ofgem
- Install and commission (2-4 days for ASHP)
- Ofgem pays £7,500 to installer within 4-6 weeks
The Welsh-only Nest scheme
Nest is the Welsh Government's flagship fuel poverty programme, run by Warm Wales. It's separate from BUS and offers much more generous funding for eligible households:
- Up to 100% of installation cost covered — heat pump fully funded
- Includes insulation upgrades, boiler/heat pump replacement, draught-proofing
- Free home energy survey to assess what's needed
- No repayments — fully grant-funded
Nest eligibility criteria
You qualify for Nest if you own (or privately rent) a Welsh home AND meet at least one of:
- Household income under £25,000/year, OR
- You receive a means-tested benefit (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, etc.), OR
- You have a chronic respiratory, cardiovascular, or mental health condition AND household income under £30,000, OR
- You're over 60 with low pension income, OR
- You have children under 5 and household income under £30,000
If you qualify for Nest, take it — it's a better deal than BUS. If not, BUS is your route.
Can I combine BUS and Nest?
No — they're alternatives, not stackable. You apply for one or the other. Nest is more generous for eligible households (covers 100%), so if you qualify, choose Nest.
Welsh local council schemes
Some Welsh councils run additional top-up schemes for heat pumps:
- Cardiff — annual eco-grants pool, ~£500-£1,500 top-up if available
- Swansea — partnerships with Warm Wales for Nest-adjacent funding
- Powys — rural off-gas-grid heat pump bonuses (~£1,000)
- Gwynedd — Welsh-language energy advice + heat pump grants
Ask your local council's housing/energy team. These vary year-to-year as council budgets are set.
